Chess coaching
Local coach Samuel Hoekman offer chess training for students aged 6 to 16. Beyond the pure enjoyment of playing, chess builds critical thinking, patience, confidence, and resilience. Some details:
When you pay for four weeks, that means four consecutive weeks. If you fail to attend class one of those weeks, you cannot make it up after the four-week run.
The road to attending classes

- $60/four-weeks for league members (any league)
- $80/four-weeks for non-league members
- Wednesdays at 4:15 (beginners) and 5:30 (intermediate)

- The parent registers the child
- Samuel will contact the parent
- The student attends the first class, free of charge
- The parent pays for classes

The Instructor
Samuel Hoekman is a former Alberta Youth Champion and served as the official representative for Canada at the 2023 World Youth Championship. As a National Candidate Master with a 2200+ peak national rating, as well as an experienced local coach, Samuel brings international-level expertise to local players.
Group 1: 4:15-5:15 pm, weekly on Wednesdays (Ages 6–11)
Level: Beginner. Master the fundamentals of chess with a curriculum focused on basic piece checkmates, opening principles, and tactical awareness. This class builds a rock-solid foundation for young players ready to start their chess journey with confidence. Recommended for pure beginners, all the way to around 600 rated on chess.com, or 800 rated on lichess. Attendance is capped at 8 students.
Group 2: 5:30-6:30 pm, weekly on Wednesdays (Ages 10–16)
Level: Intermediate. Elevate your competitive edge through improved, more complex calculations and positional evaluation. Designed for ambitious students, this course focuses on advanced strategies and tournament-ready techniques used by Canada’s top youth players. Recommended for players rated 600+ on chess.com, or 1000+ on lichess. Attendance is capped at 10 students.
