Outdoor Pickleball
If you're new to Pickleball: welcome to the Bonnie Doon drop in group. Here's a primer on how we operate:
There is no cost. I simply ask that you support your local Community League by becoming a member. The Bonnie Doon Community League allows us to use their Hall for free in the winter season, so I think it’s a reasonable request that we support all CLs. I don’t police it however; honour system. Most CLs have an on-line option to join, and most are priced between ‘free’ and $20 for families.
We are open to all levels, including absolute beginners. We are patient with folks that don't have the same skillset. At the same time there will be some very high level games.
You can come with or without a partner. You will play with a variety of different players through the session. Don't feel shy; everyone is very welcoming.
We have some loaner paddles for those who want to try it out before investing in a paddle. A decent paddle will cost between $80 & $150. You can find cheaper, but it’s worth spending a few extra dollars if you can manage it.
Other than paddles, the only equipment needed is good grip outdoor running sneakers.
We have three nets and we have balls. But if you own a net, please bring it along with you. Sometimes we are able to have 8-10 nets up and games going on them all. (That’s up to 40 players!)
We play outdoors at the Dermott District tennis courts, adjacent to the Bonnie Doon Pool & Leisure Centre.
Outdoor play is weather dependent.
In general we expect to play Saturday and Sunday mornings.
We also try to play on a weeknight. Out of a hat, I’ll pick
We'll continue playing outdoors for as long as possible. It's great to play at 5℃ to 10℃! Last year we were able to play well into October.
If the weather is really wet (or snowy!) we cannot safely play. Otherwise, chill, wind, heat: we get out and play.
See you out there!
