BDCL Board Job Descriptions: President

Responsibilities

Provides leadership to the board by:

• encouraging board members to participate in meetings and activities
  
• focusing the board’s activities on the organization’s mission.
  

Ensures the board members are oriented, trained, evaluated and recognized for their contributions.

Arranges for the orientation of committee chairpersons.

Evaluates the effectiveness of the board’s decision-making process.

Acts as a liaison between the community league and stakeholders:

• the City of Edmonton
  
• the EFCL and
  
• other civic organizations
  

Promotes the organization’s purpose in the community and acts as spokesperson for the league to the public and the media.

Participates in the selection and release of any paid employees in consultation with other board officers.

Plays a leading role in supporting fundraising activities.

Supports the board’s committees by: 

• serving as an ex-officio member of all committees and attending their meetings when needed
  
• ensuring that committee chairpersons are appointed
  

Manages the agenda of board meetings:

• ensures that new business enters the agenda as needed
  
• ensures that business is carried forward to the agenda of future meetings until the business is fully resolved
  
• notifies board members of meetings, highlighting agenda items that need preparation in advance of the meeting
  

Chairs meetings of the league and ensures meetings adhere to the agenda.

Acts as a signing officer for cheques and other documents such as contracts and grant applications.

Works closely with the Vice-President so that the VP would be able to carry out the President’s duties when required.
