The core idea of Abundant Communities is that a neighbourhood's greatest resources is its people, who each possess their own unique set of gifts. When neighbours are connected, these gifts can then be utilized and exchanged, creating a stronger and more vibrant community. The process begins with Block Connectors, who act as representatives for those living on their block. Their role is to initiate conversations with their neighbours and to gather the information necessary to realize the program's unique vision.
Since Abundant Communities was first implemented in Bonnie Doon, the program has been steadily gaining momentum and the number of active block connectors has grown to 20. Nearly one hundred households have been interviewed, and their responses to the questionnaires have yielded a wealth of information which is now being used in the following ways:
- The creation of a small business registry: a number of people in the neighbourhood have home-based businesses, and the community league would like to help promote them. A database of available services, including babysitting, accounting and home repairs is currently in the works.
- New programs offered at the hall: because a number of people are interested in yoga, the league has decided to offer an evening yoga class as well as a family class that will take place during the day. This is the beginning of many exciting programs and events that will be catered to the interests of people within our community.
- The creation of groups: several people have indicated an interest in walking, dog walking, cycling and community gardening. Groups are now being organized so that Bonnie Dooners can take part in these activities together.
