The Flying Canoe Adventure Walk is asking for volunteers to help operate the Adventure, taking place Friday & Saturday, February 7 & 8. Job descriptions are below. Orientation is at La Cité, February 5 at 7:00pm. If you can help please Call Shannon at 780-463-1144.
Responsable de feu de joie/ Fire Tenders Feux placés tout au long des sentiers du ravin/ Warming Stations throughout the Ravine Ces bénévoles gardent le feu à un niveau sécuritaire tout au long de l’événement, accueil les participants d’une façon chaleureuse tandis qu’ils arrêtent pour se réchauffer. Fire Tenders keep the fire burning at a safe level throughout the evening as well as greet and talk with event goers as they stop to visit the warming station. Moniteurs de pietons / Crossing Guards Intersections entre le ravin Mill Creek et La Cité / Intersections between Mill Creek Ravine and La Cité Les moniteurs de piétons assurent la sécurité aux participants qui croisent les rues entre le ravin Mill Creek et La Cité francophone. Crossing Guards help event goers safely cross an intersection on the walk between the ravine and La Cité. Préposés aux stationnements/ Parking Attendants Stationnement du ravin Mill Creek ou à La Cité francophone/ Mill Creek Ravine Parking Lot or at La Cité Les préposes au stationnement dirigent le trafic d’une façon sécuritaire et accueillante soit à La Cité francophone ou au ravin Mill Creek. Dans le cas ou le stationnement serait à sa capacité maximale, le préposé dirigerait les voitures vers un nouvel endroit. Parking Attendants safely and friendly direct vehicle traffic at either the Mill Creek parking lot or at the parking lot at La Cité. In the event that the parking area becomes full, the traffic would be directed to an alternate location. Lantern Collectors/ Battery Changers collect the lanterns along the ravine walk Friday night and change batteries as needed. This position runs 10 pm - 12 am (could be cycled with another). The City of Edmonton's Root for Trees volunteers planted over 21,000 trees in 2013. Root for Trees returns in 2014 with resources and funding for community efforts to plant more trees. We want recipes from you, your parents, grandparents and great grandparents that reflect your community either now or in the past. Tim Marriott, local historical presenter and Clare Mullen, writer and filmmaker are writing a cookbook based on Edmonton communities. Community leagues have always been a place where people and cultures come together and celebrate with food. We are specifically looking for recipes that you feel represent your family or your neighbourhood. If you do not have any recipes, we are hoping you will share memories or photographs of times when your family or neighbours gathered together. With winter here it seems odd to be writing about gardening, but as we see it food needs to be a year round conversation. Cathy and Ryan are two university students who are starting up an urban farm called ‘Reclaim Urban Farm.’ We want to ‘Reclaim’ unused urban spaces and transform them into intensive, yet beautiful places to grow food for sale at local markets. We choose to farm on urban land because we want to benefit our communities by increasing the beauty of our surroundings, spread awareness about local food, and provide the freshest veggies possible. Our farm philosophy includes social and environmental goals, meaning we use low impact, organic (non-certified) farming techniques and donate produce regularly to local charities. Our business strategy is to work with private land owners to gain temporary (seasonal) access to unused garden spaces, front or back yards, or empty lots. In exchange, we provide produce to the land owners either in the form of a weekly produce basket or as a donation to a local charity. Land owners also benefit through the beautification of their site (with flowers and ornamental edibles), not having to worry about yard maintenance and by enhancing their communities access to local good quality food. What we are looking for now are some places to grow vegetables. This can be a current garden space, a front yard, the space between you and your neighbor’s house, an empty lot, or any other space with dirt. Dru Davids will start a new eight-week session Zumba classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings the following week (January 28/30). All classes run from 6 to 7 pm. Exhilarating, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-parties, zumba is a great way to become healthy and fit while having fun. For more information, contact Dru. Bonnie Doon Community League is slated for a casino on Sunday and Monday, March 2 & 3, 2014. This event is our largest single funding source and could bring in up to $70,000 to support community league programs. But we need approximately 40 volunteers to run the casino. Please consider helping out.
Working a casino is fun and easy. The money raised goes to programs such as youth soccer, our ice rink, Green Shack and hall improvements. You are provided with a free meal and you have a chance to socialize with your Bonnie Doon neighbors. You can choose the shift that suits you best and you can choose the job that is the most fun for you. The venue will be Casino Edmonton, 7055 Argyll Road.. Parents whose children participate in BDCL's soccer program can fulfill their volunteer commitment by taking a shift at the casino. It's a great way to cross "volunteering for soccer" off that to do list and to help out BDCL. Nine teens from the Bonnie Doon area learned everything they need to know about babysitting. They successfully completed the babysitting course, What Every Babysitter Should Know over the Christmas holidays. An instructor with St. John Ambulance taught the course. Bonnie Doon Community League offset the cost of the course for participants. A big thank you to our social chair Margaret Russell who organized the course on behalf of BDCL and to La Cité Francophone which provided the space..
