Yo, Bonnie Doon; what are your thoughts?
The City of Edmonton has "received a request from a PhD student of Anthropology at the University of Chicago who is interested in performing limited archaeological survey and excavation in Mill Creek Ravine Park (north) to locate and study the material remains of one of the first industrial areas of the city. She hopes to identify, map, and excavate one of the earliest meatpacking plants in the city (Vogel’s Meats, founded 1902) as well as a workman’s shantytown adjacent to the packing plant. She has already received a survey and excavation permit from the Archaeology Branch of the Albertan Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The permit is for work between June 20 and August 20, 2016. No trees or shrubs would be removed but some undergrowth would be cut back. As well, excavation may impact tree roots."

Will there be an impact to the walking and biking trails?

I think it sounds like there is a really interesting potential here - I would be interested in the bank impact, particularly around area 1 and how close it gets to the current sink holes. Also the impact on the tree roots on the west side of the bank (under houses?)

Sounds cool. I hope any artifacts found would be remaining in Canada and not taken to Chicago.

There are two other industrial sites in the creek worth looking at, Twin City Coal mine and a brick making site. As well, an east side road used before the concrete culvert for Vogel Hill road. I hope this study will be published.

They'll be cleaning away trash for at least a week before any actual excavation. Very interested to see what this dig will produce in terms of artifacts.

I would love to participate in something like this! Will it be open to volunteers?
