A fair and accurate election is the cornerstone of our community -- but it takes a lot of dedicated people to ensure voters can successfully cast their ballots. The 2013 Election for Edmonton’s City Council and School Board Trustees is coming up on Monday, October 21, 2013 and Edmonton Elections needs 3,000 workers to help run the pre-election and Election Day voting stations.
Working the election is a fun, unique and rewarding experience that allows you to meet new people, get involved in your community, learn new skills, and actively participate in the democratic process that helps elect our new leaders.
There are a variety of positions to choose from, including:
● Presiding Deputy - supervises the set-up, closure and overall conduct of the voting station.
● Assistant Presiding Deputy - assists Presiding Deputies with their tasks and provides coverage for any election position in the voting station as required.
● Tabulator Clerk - runs the electronic vote tabulators.
● Ballot Clerk - issues and processes ballots.
● Deputy Returning Officer - performs a variety of tasks, from greeting voters as they arrive at the voting station to checking identification and assisting voters with the completion of the voting register.
● Standby Worker - in the event of a worker cancellation, standby workers are called upon to perform the duties and responsibilities of a vacant position.
To work the Election, you must be at least 18 years of age and be able to attend a mandatory 1-3 hour training session. Compensation ranges from $75 to $955 depending on the position and number of hours worked
Voting stations on Election Day are open from 9:00 am. until 8:00 pm. Most staff will be required to arrive one hour before the opening of the voting station and stay until the station is closed and equipment is packed and stowed.
