Great news: the City has chosen to include Bonnie Doon in their Abundant Community Initiative. This program supports grass roots efforts to increase neighbourhood wellness through encouraging connections between neighbours. For a great background story on what this is all about please read Howard Lawrence's post re their efforts in Highlands.

Fabulous - one of the things I have already suggested to our Community City of Edmonton Police officer is the following -- that neighbours in the blocks of 84th andf 85 avenue east of 91 street be aware of and maybe even have signs in their windows similar to what used to be for a BLOCK PARENT for the many seniors that travel by foot, wheelchair or scooter between their residences at St Thomas or the Seniors Apartment Block. Many times I have scooped up a senior off the ground when they had called, tipped over, or got stuck in the snow with a n electric wheelchair, walker, scooter. They are often walking to the mall by themselves and take a tumble. I make a point of driving down 84th Avenue when I come and go from my house just to see if our beautiful seniors are okay as they journey in the outdoor. Irt is a small thing to do, takes nothing of my time to do so, yet is gratefully appreciated when you can stop and help them when they are in trouble. Many of them do not or cannot afford cell phones. Another option to this would be to get some sets of wealkie talkies and have them sign them out when they are out for their walks - and they could call into a "BASE:" such as the receptionist desk at ST. Thomas if a problem occurs. I once found an elderly woman who had fallen as she was crossing the rood on 84 avenue and 89 street, she was laying oon the ground in the middle of the road and panic stricken that someone was going to drive over her - understandable. Falls are really common in seniors and I think it is a very positive part of a neighbourhood watch to just be aware of and keep out eyes out and open for them. Everyone in our community even the school kids should be aware of this need oaf our seniors.
