It is that time of year again when the University of Alberta's BaseCamp starts to plan afternoon volunteer projects for first year students in residents during Orientation Week. BaseCamp is a way to connect and introduce the new students to the local community and for them to meet their neighbours. This is an excellent way for them to start feeling at home and to be part of the neighbourhood. This year BaseCamp takes place on Friday afternoon, August 28. We are again expecting 500 to 600 students available to take on community projects.
Projects are usually manual labour jobs. In the past two years, BaseCamp volunteers have painted the local community rinks, helped with landscape or clean up at the communities' parks and playgrounds, pruned the trees in the park, moved gravel for a new pedestrian pathway, and such. We have also sent out volunteers to the City of Edmonton for Capital City Clean Up in the River Valley and to non-profit groups such as the Food Bank and Operation Friendship to serve lunch to the disadvantaged in our community.
