Folkfest Impact on Residential Parking

The Edmonton Folk Music Festival will take place August 9-12 in 2012. Of course the Folkfest is a world class event and marks the high point of the year for music lovers everywhere.

But... residents in the north end of Bonnie Doon can find the Folkfest weekend to be a frustrating time. The primary problem is parking, both in front of our homes and occasionally in front of our driveways. the Bonnie Doon Community League has begun to talk with the City and the Folkfest, attempting to improve the situation.

I live one block south of Connors Road. City of Edmonton parking enforcement during the folk festival is a joke. The city does not put up enough no parking signs or resident only parking signs. The city does ticket, but does not tow. If cars are not towed away, the parking ticket is just the cost of parking at a convenient location. Due to increased petty theft during the folk festival, I stay home rather than go to my cottage. There is not sufficient room for emergency vehicles to enter the community. We have already had one house severally damaged by fire in the neighbourhood because the fire vehicles couldn't get through the streets, and that was not during folk festival. The folk festival has outgrown its location and should be forced to move on.

We live a 1/2 block from the baptist church and have been here for close to 19 years. We love the folkfest and the energy it brings to the neighborhood. We have had our parking challenges in the past and of late, it has gotten worse. From residents taking parking signs and using them to ensure no one parks near their property to the city not consistently enforcing their own rules. We are glad to see this dilogue beginning early and hopefully a simple, effective solution to the parking challenges can be found.

We have a house on 94th Street, 1/2 block south of Connors Road. This year parking was banned on the east side and residents only on the west. In the past there was parking open to all on the west and residents only on the east. I know ticketing does go on...we've been ticketed (phoned and had the tickets cancelled as we are residents). This year the driving was MUCH improved by the more limited parking. Thanks to whoever was responsible for this improvement.

I live on 94 St. just south of Connors Road. My experience with Folk Fest is very positive. I love the energy it brings to our neighbourhood. Parking? I don't entirely understand the fuss. Most residents have parking at the back in a garage or parking spot on their property. Restricting parking to one side of 94 St. this year was a good idea and I saw a couple of cars ticketed. There were city-placed signs on 94th Ave restricting parking to residents only and there is only one fourplex on that block and they also get to park in front of their place on 94 St. AND they have parking at the back of the building. It seems to me a tempest in a teapot.
