There’s good news for Bonnie Doon’s Green Shack program. The federal government will provide a grant of $3,400 to help pay for Green Shack staff, a welcome development after the provincial government cut funding for the the Green Shack program earlier this spring.
“The Green Shack is a great way for kids to enjoy summer and it gives parents peace of mind,” said Mark Gordon, president of the Bonnie Doon Community Leauge (BDCL). “Thank you to the federal government for providing this funding.”
The Green Shack program in Bonnie Doon would have operated without the federal funding, with the BDCL covering the shortfall created by the loss in provincial funding.
“The money provided through the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs program means we don’t need to divert funds from other community league operations,” said Gordon.
In the past, the City of Edmonton, the communities and the province have been partners in funding the Green Shack program.
The program gives parents a break and offers kids a chance to get out and play in the warmer months and keeps them entertained with games, sports, crafts, music and drama. Green Shacks offer free, drop-in activities for children at local playgrounds.
The Green Shack program is geared to children ages 6 to 12. It runs in July and August.
