Bonnie Doon’s NFB Films and Lunch
Seniors are invited to a get-together each month at Bonnie Doon Hall, 9240 93 Street. It’s an opportunity to see an interesting mix of National Film board documentaries and visit with others. Films start at 10:30 and everyone is welcome, at no charge. A light lunch is served at 11:45 for $2. The hall is wheelchair accessible. The next get-together will take place on November 17 when we’ll view two documentaries with a connection to the sea.
Charting the Frozen Sea, 1982, 25 minutes. Canadian Hydrologists on the C.S.S. Hudson work against time charging a sixteen km-wide shipping corridor during the short season on the Beaufort Sea.
Debris, 2015, 15 minutes. Artist Pete Clarkson creates a tribute to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan with objects that have washed ashore, connecting Canadians with the people of the Tohoku region in Japan.
Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 15 at 10:30. We will screen the films originally scheduled for October: Rosies of the North and Bittersweet Blues.
Special thanks goes out to the City of Edmonton’s Neighbourhood Engagement program for the grant that helped us get this new seniors’ initiative started in Bonnie Doon. We appreciate the support. We also thank all the volunteers who have made it happen.
History Tea
Tony Cashman, Edmonton’s well-known author, historian, and recipient of the 2014 Alberta Order of Excellence, was our guest of honour at the History Tea on Sunday, October 23. He spoke about the sometimes perplexing nature of history and the importance of recording all versions of events. He also gave us a large aerial photograph showing Bonnie Doon in 1942. This adds an important piece to our historical puzzle. Seniors who attended our special event included two of the Sollitt girls, Doris and Dolores, Earl Anderson, Bill McLean, Mirna Green, Bob Green, Dr. David Cartledge, and Tillie Waidman. Barb Neil brought photos and stories of the McAllister Family.
Memories of Bonnie Doon Project
Time is running out as we gather stories for the Memories of Bonnie Doon history project. Our deadline is the end of December 2016. Anyone with a story about Bonnie Doon can participate. Your story can relate to an event held at Bonnie Doon Hall, your church, St. Thomas School, Mill Creek Ravine, or even your own home or business. We are looking for those special moments…the surprises, the honours, and sometimes even the tears. Contact us at 780-469-1179 or history@ bonniedoon.ca for more information. Enjoy the latest story from the Sisters of the Holy Cross: they all rushed to the 4th floor windows of the “big house” one day to watch the “rodeo” as cattle from Gainers stopped traffic on Whyte Avenue.
